Cinnamon Hearts!

24 Jan

Whether its Christmas, Birthdays, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, or Thanksgiving, my mom has decorations for everything!  One of my favorite things she decorates is a small, fake Christmas tree that she themes for every holiday.  At Halloween the “Halloween Tree” has orange string lights and black cats, crows, and pumpkin ornaments. For Christmas she goes back to white lights and fabric bows, felt candy canes, and snowmen ornaments and for Valentine’s Day she makes Cinnamon Hearts and ties them to the tree with red plaid bows! Since Valentine’s Day is coming right around the corner and we just finished our Cinnamon Hearts, I thought today would be the perfect time to share the recipe and a picture of the infamous “Valentine’s Day Tree!”

Recipe: Cinnamon Hearts

Serves 10-12

1 Cup Cinnamon

1 Tblsp. Nutmeg

1 Tblsp. Ground Cloves

3/4 Cup Applesauce

3 Tblsp. White Glue

2 Cookie Sheets

Wax Paper

Heart Cookie Cutters

Mix the first three ingredients (cinnamon, nutmeg, & ground cloves), and then add the applesauce and glue. Mix until dough forms.  Divide the dough in half and then roll out on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper.  Once dough is flat cut out heart shapes with cookie cutters.  Poke a hole in the top of the heart if hanging as an ornament.  Place the ornaments on a separate cookie sheet lined with wax paper and set out to dry for two days.  Turn the hearts over each day and once completely dry insert ribbon into the hole and tie a knot!
